Planning for the GABBA first started in 1895 and the first cricket match was held at the GABBA in 1895. The first Sheffield Shield match at the GABBA was scheduled to be played in 1931 but was rained out. The first Test match was played in 1931 between Australia and South Africa. The GABBA hosted greyhound racing between 1972 and 1992. The Brisbane Bears made the GABBA their home in 1993 when they relocated from the Gold Coast. The GABBA was renovated extensively between 1993 and 2005 to accomodate the needs from their major tenant the Brisbane Lions AFL team. The Queensland Government have confirmed that the GABBA will be the main stadium for the 2032 Summer Olympics and the current venue will be demolished in early 2026 with the new Stadium to be open by late 2029.
