Heritage Bank Stadium was first opened in 1987. It has been known as Laver Oval, Carrara Oval, Gold Coast Stadium and Metricon Stadium. Originally the home of the Brisbane Bears from 1987 to 1993, it has been used for rugby league, rugby union baseball and concerts. Lights were installed in 1989 for night matches, but the Brisbane Bears struggled on the Gold Coast before relocating to the GABBA in 1993. Heritage Bank Stadium was the main stadium for the 2018 Commonwealth Games. It may host cricket matches for the 2032 Summer Olympics.
The stadium had a major redevelopment between 2009 and 2011 to provide a proper venue for the Gold Coast Suns. The permanent capacity of 25000 was enlarged to 35000 with temporary grandstands for the Commonwealth Games.
